For the 1999-2000, 2000-2001, and 2001-2002 editions, the
UAUJE presented awards to three papers published in each issue.
The UAUJE would like to sincerely thank the Kazanjian Economics
Foundation for its generous financial support during the early
years of the UAUJE. Beginning with the 2002-2003 edition, however,
the awards will no longer be offered by the journal.
Bernard J. McCarney Award
The Bernard J. McCarney Award was awarded to the paper which
was voted first by a panel of independent voters. The author
of the paper receives a check for $750. Dr. Bernard J. McCarney
recieved his undergraduate degree from ISU. He attended the University
of Illinois for his masters degree and the University of Pittsburg
where he recieved his PhD. in transportation economics. Dr. McCarney
taught at ISU with an emphasis in economic education. He served
on the Illinois Council on Economic Education for 21years and
retired in 1994. He was married for 38 years and has 3 children
and 7 grandchildren.
Thomas H. Graden Award
The Thomas H Graden Award was awarded to the paper which was
voted second by a panel of independent voters. The author of
the paper receives a check for $500. Dr. Thomas H. Graden received
his undergraduate degree from Clark University, his master's
degree from Boston University and his Ph.D. from New York University.
Dr. Graden taught at Temple University in Philadelphia, Northeastern
University in Boston, and Georgia Southern University, where
he retired in 1991. Dr. Graden was marketing director for Fram
Corporation as well as a board member of the Calvin K. Kazanjian
Economics Foundation.
Virginia L. Owen Award
The Virginia L. Owen Award was awarded to the paper which
was voted third by a panel of independent voters. The author
of the paper receives a check for $250. Dr. Virginia Owen is
Professor Emeritus of Economics, having joined the faculty in
1964. She served as Chairperson of the Economics Department from
1978-1981 and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1982-1993.
She has written or edited 12 books and manuals and over 50 articles
in professional journals. Her major research interest is the
economics of the arts. She has won two national teaching awards
from the National Council on Economic Education. Raised in Bloomington,
she received degrees from Illinois State University and University
of Illinois. She has three sons. |
