Graduate Curriculum

34-Hour Applied Economics

Students in Applied Economics must complete the following course requirements:

 

I. Core Courses (19 hours): ECO 437, ECO 438, ECO 439, ECO 440, ECO 441, ECO 495.

II. Additional 400-level Courses (6 hours): ECO Concentration Course #1, ECO Concentration Course # 2

III. Additional Electives -inside or outside the department- (9 hours): Elective 1 (300 or 400 level), Elective 2 (300 or 400 level), Elective 3 (300 or 400 level)

 

 

34-Hour Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications

Students selecting this option are required to take the following core and specialized courses:

 

I. Core Courses (19 hours): ECO 437, ECO 438, ECO 439, ECO 440, ECO 441, ECO 495.

II. Specialized Courses: ECO 335, ECO 435, ECO 436

III. Additional Electives -inside or outside the department- (6 hours): Elective 1 (Internship*), Elective 2 (300 or 400 level)

* (Note: An elective course can be substituted for the internship)

 

 

34-Hour Applied Community and Economic Development

Students selecting this sequence are required to take the following core and specialized courses that deal specifically with issues related to community and economic development. These include:

 

I. Core Courses: (16 hours):ECO 437, ECO 438, ECO 440, ECO 441, ECO 495.

II. Specialized Courses ( ): ECO 490.04, POS/SOC 470, GEO 370, POS 474, POS 475, POS 476, ECO 498.03

III. Additional Electives: Elective 1 (300 or 400 level)

 


34- Hour Applied Economic with Thesis

Beyond the core requirement, students can select courses designed to achieve specific career goals. Students can choose four elective courses (12 hours), some of which may be from other departments. These electives, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Program Director, permit considerable flexibility in tailoring a plan of study that meets the individuals specific career objectives.

 

In addition, a master's thesis is required to complete this option. The thesis is an exercise in which the student is expected to demonstrate the mature application of the tools and knowledge learned in the coursework to some economic problem. Five hours of credit is typically given for the thesis exercise toward the completion of the overall 33 hours required under this option.

 

 

34- Hour Applied Economics

Students in this option must complete the following course requirements:

 

I. Core Courses (19 hours):ECO 437, ECO 438, ECO 439, ECO 440, ECO 441, ECO 495, ECO 499 (6 hours).

II. Additional 400-level Courses (6 hours): ECO Concentration Course #1, ECO Concentration Course # 2

III. Additional Electives -inside or outside the department- (6 hours): Elective 1 (300 or 400 level), Elective 2 (300 or 400 level), Elective 3 (300 or 400 level)

 

 

Scheduling

Core courses are scheduled as follows: ECO 437, 439, and 440 are offered every Fall semester; ECO 435, 436, 438, 441, and 495 are offered every Spring semester. offered every semester during the regular academic year. No core courses, and only a limited number of elective courses, are offered in the summer session.

 

The internship for the Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Sequence (ECO 498.02) can be scheduled for any semester, including summer.

 

Course scheduling accommodates part-time study. Core courses are typically scheduled to meet twice each week and are offered at night at least every other year. All courses in the Electricity, Natural Gas and Telecommunications Sequence are scheduled for one night per week.
